Write Protection

UDinfo SSD "write protection" is designed to protect data integrity. It’s a locking mechanism which avoids modification of data on a storage device. Once SSD storage devices are write-protected, the users are not allowed to delete or edit data or files. This write protection function is enabled by hardware or software settings.

The Write Protect option allows the users to enable GPIO, via a physical switch (hardware), command (Software) or both to disable writes to the flash storage device. By having the write protect mode, the data on the flash devices are protected with the read-only feature. With this security measure, it will effectively stop any tampering or other malicious use of the device.

For WP through software control, users can trigger the ATA commands via Host software setup to SSD of which the firmware receives and records the issued commands, then the NAND is activated to write in protection. Therefore, the SSD will not execute the write-in action to NAND Flash of any relevant commands. This will not result in any hardware change, but only through software and firmware to achieve write-protection.

For WP through hardware control, there is an external switch on the SSD circuit board, which is connected to the GPIO Pin. Once the user turns on the switch, the WP function is activated. Then SSD firmware will detect the signal from GPIO Pin which activates write-protection.

This can be used if there is a need to protect original or recently generated information from becoming overwritten. This solution is the best way to prevent end users from deleting, modifying, and even formatting the data. Also, it is to protect the files against viruses and other malware infections.
